Build a Face, Explore a Feeling
Help children recognise, name and talk about emotions while developing important fine motor skills with this interactive Feelings & Emotions Build-a-Face Printable Activity.
Children choose a character, cut out different eyes, mouths and emotion labels, then mix and match the pieces to create their own facial expressions.
It combines emotional literacy with hands-on fine motor practice, making it especially useful for Occupational Therapy activities, SEN/SEND support, social-emotional learning, counselling sessions, calm corners and classroom wellbeing work.
Rather than simply looking at emotion cards, children actively build the expression themselves, encouraging them to notice the small facial clues that can tell us how somebody may be feeling.

How to Use
Choose a character and an emotion to explore.
Children can select different eyes and mouths, cut out the pieces and experiment with arranging them on the blank face until they have created an expression.
They can then choose the matching emotion word.
Use the included prompts to extend the activity and encourage deeper conversations:
- What clues tell you how this person might be feeling?
- What do you notice about their eyes and mouth?
- When might somebody feel this way?
- Have you ever felt like this?
- What might make someone feel this emotion?
- What could help someone who feels this way?
There is not always only one way for a feeling to look, which also creates opportunities to talk about how different people can express the same emotion differently.
Occupational Therapy & Fine Motor Ideas
The activity can easily be incorporated into an OT session or fine motor programme.
Children can practise cutting around different shapes, stabilising the paper with one hand while cutting with the other, picking up small facial features, rotating pieces and carefully positioning them onto the face.
For an additional challenge, children can:
- Cut around the individual facial features independently
- Colour the black-and-white characters
- Glue pieces into position
- Copy an emotion flashcard
- Create an emotion from a verbal description
- Build an expression and ask someone else to identify it
- Design their own facial expression
- Explain why they chose particular eyes or mouths
These variations allow the activity to be adapted for different levels of fine motor ability, communication and emotional understanding.
Black-and-White Version Included
An ink-friendly black-and-white version is included.
Children can colour and personalise the characters before assembling their faces, adding another opportunity for pencil control, creativity and fine motor practice.
For repeated use, the faces and pieces can also be laminated and attached using reusable adhesive dots or hook-and-loop fasteners.
