Free ADHD Iceberg Poster Printable: Helping Children Understand What Lies Beneath the Surface

Free ADHD Iceberg Poster Printable: Helping Children Understand What Lies Beneath the Surface

When we think about ADHD, we often focus on the behaviours we can see.

A child may appear distracted, impulsive, forgetful, talkative, disorganised or constantly on the move. These behaviours are often noticed first by parents, teachers and other adults.

But behaviour is only the visible tip of the iceberg.

Beneath the surface, a child may be experiencing overwhelm, anxiety, low self-esteem, sensory overload, emotional dysregulation, time blindness, working memory difficulties or exhaustion from trying to hide their struggles.

That is why I created this free ADHD Iceberg Poster printable—a colourful visual resource designed to help children and adults explore what may be happening beneath the behaviours they see.

What Is the ADHD Iceberg?

The iceberg is a simple way to explain that we cannot always see everything a person is experiencing.

The small section above the water represents the behaviours that other people may notice, such as:

  • Being easily distracted

  • Acting impulsively

  • Talking frequently

  • Arriving late

  • Fidgeting

  • Forgetting things

  • Appearing disorganised

  • Making careless mistakes

The much larger section beneath the water represents some of the less visible challenges that may be contributing to those behaviours.

These can include:

  • Overwhelm

  • Anxiety

  • Low self-esteem

  • Time blindness

  • Emotional dysregulation

  • Sensory overload

  • Rejection sensitivity

  • Difficulty starting tasks

  • Working memory challenges

  • Sleep struggles

  • Shame or frustration

  • Exhaustion from masking

Not every person with ADHD will experience all of these challenges, and ADHD can look different from one person to another. The poster is intended to encourage curiosity, understanding and supportive conversations rather than labelling or judging a child.

Why Visual Printables Can Help Children Understand

Big ideas such as emotions, attention, executive functioning and hidden struggles can be difficult for children to explain in words.

Visual resources can make these ideas feel more concrete and easier to explore.

A printable poster gives children something they can look at, point to and discuss. Instead of asking a broad question such as, “Why did you behave like that?”, an adult might use the poster to ask:

“Were you feeling overwhelmed?”

“Was it difficult to get started?”

“Did you forget what you needed to do?”

“Were things feeling too noisy or busy?”

This can make conversations feel less confrontational and more supportive.

Visuals can also provide a shared reference point for children, parents, teachers and professionals. They help shift the focus away from simply correcting behaviour and towards understanding what the child may need.

Ways to Use the ADHD Iceberg Poster

This free printable can be used in many different settings.

At home

Display the poster in a quiet family space, homework area or calming corner. Use it to help your child identify what they may be feeling when a situation becomes difficult.

In the classroom

Teachers can use the poster as part of an ADHD awareness lesson, social-emotional learning activity or classroom discussion about neurodiversity and individual differences.

It can also serve as a helpful reminder that behaviour may be communicating an unmet need.

In counselling or therapy

Counsellors, occupational therapists and other professionals can use the poster to begin conversations about hidden feelings, executive functioning, self-esteem and emotional regulation.

A child may find it easier to point to a word on the poster than to explain the experience independently.

During staff training

The ADHD Iceberg can support discussions with teachers, teaching assistants and support staff about looking beyond behaviour and responding with empathy.

Encouraging Understanding Instead of Judgement

Children with ADHD are often told to:

“Try harder.”

“Pay attention.”

“Stop interrupting.”

“Be more organised.”

“Just get started.”

However, these instructions do not always address the difficulty the child is experiencing beneath the surface.

A child who appears unmotivated may actually feel overwhelmed by where to begin.

A child who forgets instructions may be experiencing working memory difficulties.

A child who becomes upset by a small correction may already be carrying frustration, anxiety or low self-esteem.

Understanding the possible reason behind a behaviour does not mean that boundaries and expectations disappear. It means we can respond in a way that teaches skills, offers appropriate support and protects the child’s confidence.
